After-Hours Doctor —
Open Sundays & Public Holidays

Illness doesn't keep office hours, and neither do we. VDOC doctors consult by video from as early as 5am to as late as 10pm, including Sundays and public holidays, when most GP practices are closed.

A GP when your practice is closed

Most GP practices in South Africa open on weekdays during business hours, with a few hours on Saturday morning. Get sick at 9pm on a Sunday, on Christmas Day or over the Easter weekend, and the usual options are to wait or to pay for a hospital emergency unit and sit in a long queue.

VDOC is different. Our doctors work on a video platform, not from a building with fixed opening hours, so many of them consult early in the morning, late in the evening, on Sundays and on public holidays. Some start as early as 5am and others consult until 10pm.

You see every open slot when you book, choose the time that suits you, and join the video call from home. If it's clinically appropriate, the doctor can issue a prescription or a sick note, just like a daytime visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a doctor open on Sunday?

Yes. VDOC doctors consult by video on Sundays, so you can see a GP without waiting for Monday or going to an emergency unit. Each doctor sets their own hours. Check the available times when you book.

Can I see a doctor on a public holiday?

Yes. Doctors on VDOC consult on public holidays, including Christmas, New Year and the Easter weekend. Availability varies by doctor, so book as early as you can.

How early and how late can I see a doctor?

Some VDOC doctors start consulting as early as 5am and others work until 10pm. Times differ between doctors and days, and you can see every available slot when you book online or on WhatsApp.

Is an after-hours online consultation more expensive?

Each doctor sets their own fee, and you see the exact price before you book. GP consultations start from R250, which is usually far less than an after-hours visit to a hospital emergency unit.

Can I get a sick note or prescription after hours?

Yes. An after-hours video consult works exactly like a daytime one. If clinically appropriate, the doctor can issue a prescription or a medical certificate after the call.

When should I go to an emergency unit instead?

Go to an emergency unit or call 10111 or 112 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, signs of a stroke, a seizure, a serious injury, or a baby under 3 months with a fever. A video consult is for problems that are urgent to you but not life-threatening.
